How to Test Garden Soil Conditions at Home

Good soil quality is key to healthy garden plants. You can easily test soil conditions at home with these methods:

Test Soil pH
1.Gather pH test strips, a clean container, and pure water.
Take soil from different spots in the garden, 4-9 cm deep. Mix the soil and remove debris.
Add twice the amount of pure water to the soil, stir well, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Dip a pH test strip into the liquid for 1-2 seconds, then compare it to the color chart to get the pH reading.

2.Check Soil Texture
Soil falls into sand, loam, and clay, which affect water retention, nutrient holding, and drainage.
Dry test: Rub dry soil between your fingers. Sandy soil feels rough with a gritty texture; clay soil feels smooth and sticky; loam has a mix of both. When you squeeze dry soil into a clump, sandy soil won't hold its shape and breaks apart easily. Clay forms a hard clump, while loam shapes easily and crumbles when pressed lightly.

3.Assess Soil Fertility
Plants that grow strong with green leaves, bright flowers, and plenty of fruit mean fertile soil. Slow growth, yellow leaves, small size, and few flowers or fruit may show poor fertility. For example, yellow leaves can mean low nitrogen. Brown edges on leaves can indicate low potassium.

The PH210E PH Meter is a classic and practical tool. Prepare the soil liquid as above, then use it. It has a precision of 0.01pH, is easy to operate, and shows readings directly on the screen. More accurate than test strips, this helps you check if soil suits plants (e.g., precisely monitoring the 4.0-5.5 pH range needed for blueberries).
